Zara sent an address an hour back, and I decide to surprise her. I park outside, scanning the building. It’s cool, I’ll give her that.

As I admire the downstairs and entrance area, a couple of young women run down the stairs laughing. They’re both cool and wearing chic clothing. It has to be the right place, even if there’s nothing on the door. At the top of wide white industrial steps, I knock loudly.

“Hello, the house.”

There is no reply, so I look around and slowly enter.

It is all white, with sky lights and high ceilings. There are many huge tables, most bare, and a lot of stylish clothing racks.

Fashion designs cover tables, and dozens of mannequins line a wall, all without clothing.

Stunning black and white fashion images hang like in an art gallery, and it’s some of the best fashion from the last century. I look up and around as I mumble, “Holy shit.”

The light streams in from above, and it feels like some kind of industrial church come design studio.

I check my Rolex, suddenly remembering I have a meeting in two hours. Hearing feet on polished concrete, I turn.

In the distance, Zara yells loudly and runs at me. It’s good to see her again, and she leaps high into my arms.

We spin around fast, and I hold her tight. “Congratulations, babe.”

“Thanks, so good to see you,” she says, kissing me, then forcing her tongue between my lips.

I kiss her back and pin her against the wall. “And I’m going to take you here, and on every surface.”

“Don’t you dare!” she says. “The last thing I need is distracting memories of you taking me! I won’t be able to think of anything else.”

Zara leaps down and pulls me by the hand. She shows me each room, excited and proud. I’m happy for her. She is more alive than ever.

Finally, she shows me a chic open-planned apartment down the back with its very own Japanese garden and courtyard.

She explains it’s where she will live, and she spins around arms wide.

“Stunning,” I say, loving it, but also, I hate the space.

The idea of her being in the same city as me but being in different beds makes me jealous and angry. It doesn’t feel right. I do a double take on the bed, and I wonder how fast it will go up in flames if I return with gasoline. If I have a bed in a city, she belongs on it! End of story.

“I love it,” I say, realizing I’ve used the ‘love’ word around us.

“I love it, too,” Zara says, settling into my arms.

We both smile and glow. It feels new, but it feels good. “So, lunch,” I say. “And a celebration! I’ll book my favorite table.”

“Can’t. Busy!”

“Doing what?” I ask, amazed and unsure.

“Designing, and don’t you have movies to make?”

Zara shoves me from her room. It’s a bouncy, light, positive, playful Zara I’ve never seen.

“This unexpected visit is over, sir. And this is not a place you can drop by anytime!”

“That’s exactly what it is,” I say, making things clear.
